Fleamarkets in Berlin

First Class Second Hand Stuff

Flohmarkt Boxhagener Platz FahrradSunday … Sunday is flea market day in Berlin. For Berliners a normal Sunday starts with a proper brunch in one of the popular cafés in Prenzlauer Berg, Friedrichshain or Kreuzberg. But after that it's flea market time! And Berlin has got plenty of them. The two most important ones are ‘Boxi-Market‘ at Boxhagenerplatz and the one at ‘Mauerpark’.

If you want to do it like the locals, then don’t go to the market before 2pm.  You’ll get to see all the interesting people, right than. An old grandma selling flowers from her garden, a guy giving you a good deal for a bike (which he may or may not have stolen the night before), or another guy selling locks for bikes. (it seems like they are working hand in hand. So make sure you look after your bike).

In Berlin at flea markets you can buy many rarities and curiosities… stuff you don’t really need but will buy anyway.  There’s plenty of vinyl, retro, kitsch and DDR oddities, old postcards and of course a big variety of clothing. The Boxi-Market is not only famous for the stuff you can buy there, it’s more a place to meet friends or make new ones. Of course you can get some good stuff there, like t-shirts (don’t pay more than 15€), buttons and patches in many colours and with any kind of statement.

Big trees provide shady spots at the local cafes and bars – great for looking at people, resting your shopping-weary legs and wondering why you bought that late sixties plastic DDR clock for 40 Euros…
